Assistant Public Defenders work on juvenile and adult criminal cases carrying a jail eligible sentence. These cases can range from traffic offenses to serious felonies. In addition, the Juvenile Division of the Public Defender’s Office can also be appointed to work on abuse and neglect cases, representing both the minors and the guardians/parents. The Public Defender’s Office does not receive appointments for civil cases (i.e. divorce, child support, paternity cases, bankruptcy, foreclosure, etc.) or ordinance violations, etc.
